Pleasures Prejudice Pride: An Indian Way of Filmmaking (Piyush Roy, 2019)
Monday, 14 October 2019, 6.30-8.30pm. Halle Lecture Theatre, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.
The Centre for Communication, Cultural and Media Studies at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh is delighted to present a free screening of a new documentary 'Pleasures Prejudice Pride: An Indian Way of Filmmaking', followed by a discussion panel featuring the director, Dr Piyush Roy and author, poet and key contributor to the film, Professor Bashabi Fraser. The discussion will be Chaired by Dr J Mark Percival, Senior Lecturer in Media at Queen Margaret University. Piyush's film asks a number of provocative questions, including:
• Why do Western audiences love the very aspects of popular Indian cinema that Western critics dismiss as pastiche?
• Is song and dance an inferior form of storytelling?
• Can there be standardised parameters for reviewing diverse national cinemas?
• Who sets those benchmarks?
• Do films from colonised nations suffer from post-colonial racism?
The film has been travelling through Indian academic spaces since early 2019. The UK tour (in September-October 2019) will mark the film's first international showcase followed by an East Asian Universities tour later this year. Please do join us for this very special screening and discussion.
Tickets are FREE but booking is essential:
