*Environmental Justice and Alternatives to Development in Latin America:
Knowledge, Narratives and Cultural Production*
*An interdisciplinary workshop*
*Friday 6 March, 2020*
*CAMEo Research Institute for Cultural and Media Economies/Leicester
Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Leicester*
This one-day workshop will explore current environmental conflicts,
environmental justice movements, and alternatives to development in Latin
America from the perspectives of narrative, knowledge production, and
creative practice.
To that end, researchers from across the sciences and the arts and
humanities will come together to exchange perspectives and collectively
think about the role that cultural production has in the representation of
conflicts, but also in the production of knowledge and of socialities in a
context of environmental degradation and urgent need for systemic change.
The workshop will consist of presentations by guest speakers, workshop
sessions with short paper presentations followed by discussion, and a
masterclass on research, activism and knowledge production in environmental
conflicts led by Dr Gabriela Merlinsky, Researcher at CONICET (Argentina),
and Head of the Environmental Studies Group at Gino Germani Research
Institute, University of Buenos Aires.
Other confirmed speakers:
- Dr Sara Mingorría (Scholar-activist at ICTA-UAB and FRACTAL
Collective): “Transcultural expressions in environmental justice movements”
- Dr David Dumoulin (Associate Professor and Adjunct Director at CREDA,
IHEAL, Paris III): “The aesthetics of tropical biology stations: A
particular idea of Nature”
- Dr Paula Serafini (CAMEo Research Institute, University of Leicester):
“Extractivism and cultural production”
