19th Century newspapers contain lists of "Bank Returns pursuant to 7&8
Vic cap.32", which give name, parish, and trade of "persons of whom the
company or partnership consists".
Does this mean that they were shareholders as we know the term today or
that they just had a bank account?
My interest is in a family, some of whom were ropemakers. James
practised this trade, but his son, Alfred, is listed as a ropemaker
living in Cranbrook from 1865-79. However, there is no other
documentary evidence that he followed this trade and at the time of the
1871 census he was an working as a Ag Lab in a neighbouring parish
although the entry remained the same!
