Hi all,
Apologies for cross posting.
I am doing a dissertation on technology watch & how it is undertaken in the UK archive sector. I have already received some responses to my initial request, which i am very grateful for. More responses would still be welcome.
I define technology watch as: “the continual process of monitoring technological progress, change and issues, in order to enable the preservation and continued accessibility, and usability, of digital objects.” (This can include things such as keeping UpToDate with new standards, software, hardware, training, and workflows relating to your archives technology & digital content). The aim is to find out how archives keep up to date with technological issues such as, obsolescence, monitoring/finding new technologies they may wish to utilise, identify potential need for training/further technological expertise and select standards relating to digital content they may wish to follow.
I would be extremely grateful if you would take a few minutes of your time to answer this short list of questions:
What is the name of your organisation/institution?
Do you actively engage in technology watch?
If yes, why? If no, what is the reason(s) you do not?
If you are doing technology watch, how do you do it?
Have you ever done any of the following in response to technology watch?
Migration,
Emulation,
Refreshing,
Change system,
Make choices regarding file format i.e. select a specific format to use,
Decommissioned old/purchased new equipment,
Commissioned staff to go on training/attending training yourself
Adopted a standard
Other (please specify)
If yes, could you please give an example of how technology watch informed that action(s) (if you have multiple examples, please include as many as you can if possible).
Do you think the responsibility of technology watch should fall to a sector leader (i.e. TNA, DPC, ARA)?
What are the most urgent issues in regard to digital preservation in your organisation?
Please send any responses to [log in to unmask] Any further comments on this would be welcome.
Thank you for your time,
Owen
