I co-published an article in Sustainability.
The whole commercial open access system is pretty predatory, whether
"scientifically legit" or not.
My experience with Sustainability: our article was part of a special
issue that was set up by 'real' people who sent out a call through their
own networks. It went through the SI editor's as well as the journal's
peer review. We received two proper, fully commented reviews from the
journal, though both were pretty positive (whether legitimately so
someone else would have to judge!) so it ended up being a quick turnover
indeed.
Doesn't the whole lot of academic publishing use both predatory and
ivory-tower-gate-keeping strategies to, at the end of the day,
accumulate wealth/power/influence (your pick)?
The big question remains what sort of 'knowledge' this ultimately
generates and legitimises...
