We are looking for a Mobile App Developer (fixed term with 5 months funding)for an exciting Microsoft Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Accessibility-funded project to create a new dataset to be used for personalising object recognition, aimed at visually impaired people, and to develop a curriculum around AI for blind and low vision young people. As part of the project we will develop a data collection app and procedure which will enable blind and low vision people to submit labeled images which are then validated before being added to the dataset. We will conduct machine learning experiments on this data set to evaluate its performance for personalising object recognition, and investigate the feasibility to intergrate this into existing apps such as Seeing AI. As part of the project we will also develop an Artificial Intelligence curriculum aimed at blind and low vision young people (14-21 year olds), which is coupled with the data collection.
The Mobile App Developer will work as part of a small team to design and develop an iPhone app to collect and build a data set to be used in the project, and provide support for the research assistant. The post holder will work with stakeholders to gather requirements, advise on development best practice, contribute to project planning and to the development of the iPhone app. You will provide support for the iPhone app; liaise with the research team to resolve problems; support and develop the project services and apps, and work to ensure the smooth-running and availability of the app.
The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of Swift 5 and/or Objective-C; experience with Xcode IDE and the Cocoa Touch framework; as well as experience of developing iPhone apps, including knowledge of app standards and Apple Human Interface Guidelines. You will also have experience of relational databases; knowledge and experience of software testing and experience with accessibility features for the iOS platform.
You will be working within the Centre for HCI Design at City, University of London. The Centre for HCI Design (HCID) based in the Department of Computer Science was originally established 25 years ago and has a reputation as one of the largest and most successful HCI research groups in the UK. HCID's activities focus on designing systems for real-world use that are informed by engaging with a variety of stakeholders, centred around innovative applications for embedding smart technology in everyday environments, novel ways of communicating with the user, and new ways for a diverse range of users to access and retrieve information.
