General Call for Participation

Now in its 29th year the event formerly known as the Machine Evaluation Workshop combines an exhibition of the latest High Performance Computing (HPC) hardware and software with a programme of presentations from users  who provide delegates with an overview of their use of HPC in real life situations. Attendees are able to hear success stories and problems encountered as projects make use of the latest HPC tools and equipment, as well as the solutions implemented to make the projects successful. Through its exhibition Computing Insight UK (CIUK) allows attendees to communicate with a wide and varied selection of hardware and software vendors and resellers under one roof.

This year, CIUK will take place on the 5-6 December 2019 at Manchester Central Convention Complex. The main theme of the event is "Computing The Future" with the event divided into two sub-themes. The first day (Thursday 5 December) will focus on "Computing Today" with sessions on "Cloud Computing Today", "Software Development Today" and "Data Science - Convergence of AI and HPC". The second day (Friday 6 December) will look at "Computing Tomorrow and Into the Future" with sessions on "Hardware Towards Exascale", "Software Development Towards Exascale" and "Quantum Computing". As with previous years, CIUK aims to provide a programme of engaging and thought-provoking speakers highlighting the various ways computing boosts research, business and society around us. We are also looking for proposals for interesting and educational breakout sessions to run alongside the main programme, as well as submissions to our student poster competition.

With this call we invite applications to four separate parts of the event:

1.       Presentations in the main programme (Deadline Sunday 8 September)

2.       Breakout sessions to run in parallel to the main programme (Deadline Friday 20 September)

3.       The Jacky Pallas Memorial Award (Deadline Friday 4 October)

4.       Posters for our student poster competition (Deadline Friday 20 October)

Please note that each call has its own deadline. The deadlines are not the same for all four calls.

1.       CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
We are currently accepting applications to present in the main programme at CIUK 2019. Each slot will be 30 minutes long and will provide the opportunity for you to share the challenges and successes of real life projects. Brief abstracts of no more than 300 words, summarising your talk and relevant information to support your application, should be uploaded here<https://www.dropbox.com/request/dPI5mqwNgtur92Ir7tk3>. We encourage you to think about how you will make your presentation as engaging as possible whilst addressing the themes for the conference outlined above, and include this in your abstract. Full papers, or more detailed outlines of presentations will then be requested from successful applicants.

2.       CALL FOR BREAKOUT SESSIONS
We are currently accepting proposals for breakout sessions at CIUK 2019. The breakout sessions will run in parallel to the main programme and the exhibition. The programme for the breakout sessions is split into four equal sessions: Thursday 5 December morning (10am-12pm), Thursday 5 December afternoon (2pm-4pm), Friday 6 December morning (10am-12pm) and Friday 6 December afternoon (2pm-4pm). Each session is 2 hours long although there may be some room to expand this within reason if required. We are also open to proposals for full day sessions.

3.       JACKY PALLAS MEMORIAL AWARD
We are currently accepting submissions for the inaugural Jacky Pallas Memorial Award. Earlier this year we lost an incredibly important member of the CIUK Scientific Advisory Committee with the sudden and unexpected passing of Jacky Pallas at the age of just 54. Jacky was head of e-Research at King's College London and for the last three years had been an active and vocal member of the CIUK SAC, helping to shape the direction our event has taken and pushing through many positive changes, whilst championing diversity and the inclusion of young researchers. In her memory, and in recognition of her passion for our conference, we have decided to introduce an annual award that will highlight the work of an early career researcher and will allow the award winner a slot in the main programme at CIUK.  Researchers will be nominated by their supervisors and the selected speaker will receive free entry to CIUK, the speaking slot, travel expenses and an award. We are looking for nominations for presentations that highlight the impact of a project that your early career researchers have been working on.

4.       CALL FOR POSTERS
We are currently accepting applications for our student poster competition. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, all forms of advances in high performance computing, storage, networking, big data analysis, quantum computing, exascale, and software development. Successful applicants will be invited to display their posters during the two days of the event. A panel of judges will select their winning poster with an announcement made on the main stage before the final session on the afternoon of Friday 6 December. We will also waive registration fees to the event for all students selected to present posters during the event so you will be able to enjoy the CIUK exhibition and full programme of presentations and breakout sessions free of charge.
