The Centre for Health Informatics, Computation and Statistics (CHICAS) at the Lancaster Medical School has an opportunity for a talented biostatistician to contribute to a major study into multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease. The Trajectories of Outcome in Neurological Conditions (TONiC) study is a major UK-wide longitudinal study examining the factors that influence quality of life in patients with neurological conditions. Participants were enrolled in the study within one year of diagnosis and were followed up at regular intervals over the course of five years. The aim of TONiC is to identify factors that affect quality of life in patients with neurological disorders, and help improve the lives of patients that suffer from these diseases.
You will develop and apply longitudinal statistical models to the quality-of-life data that has been collected on these patients. You will be based within CHICAS at Lancaster University, under the supervision of Dr Frank Dondelinger. You will also be closely working with the TONiC coordinating team, led by Professor Carolyn Young at the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust. You will have regular interactions with clinical and medical science researchers to discuss ideas and validate findings.
CHICAS is a vibrant and diverse research group within the Lancaster Medical School, comprising researchers into epidemiology, longitudinal and spatial biostatistics, machine learning and statistical genomics. The group has close ties to both the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and the Lancaster Data Science Institute, both of which have a reputation for excellence in statistical and computational research.
Interviews will take place at the start of September 2019. The post is available from October 2019 for a duration of 15 months initially, with the possibility of extension (subject to funding). The start date is flexible.
