There's an interesting section in Andrew Warwick's *Masters of Theory* which
discusses how the word "coaching" developed in Cambridge slang c.1820 to
reflect the fashion for speedy stage and mail coaches.
I have been looking for studies of how vocabulary evolves but do not have
the words to search with. What is this area of study called? Surely there
are PhDs in it!
Ideas welcome. (Also, what about "training"? - nothing to do with
locomotives, surely?)
Thanks
