Information: Across the globe, nation states face enormous challenges in meeting housing needs across diverse communities, with increasing pressures on housing systems necessitating review of policy and interventions. Economic, social, political and environmental change is often experienced inequitably across socio economic groups and the impacted communities may be overlooked, despite the fundamental importance of social wellbeing to recovery and long-term resilience. The ‘social’ dimension of housing is often overlooked for more immediate focus on numbers, building, design and markets. Social sustainability has become a key concern in the light of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and particularly SDG 11 on sustainable settlements and housing. This thematic issue on home, housing and communities will contribute to understand the social impact of context and change in households and communities. It will present new research that centralises the social role of housing in exploring wider impacts and challenges around the significance of home and the flourishing of communities.
Questions the thematic issue aims to explore include:
What different roles does the housing sector play in addressing or enhancing issues of inequality?
What is the recent evidence on the social role of housing in building inclusive and sustainable homes and communities?
What theoretical perspectives contribute to our understanding of the social role of housing (e.g. rights based approaches, citizen empowerment)?
What changes are required in housing policy and in housing systems (and in other systems such as labour markets) to make them more socially inclusive? What challenges do socially inclusive reforms face?
The thematic issue aims to bring together research across housing tenures and social groups that explore common themes around social inclusion, social sustainability and equality in the housing sector. For example, articles may examine the housing experiences of the LGBT community, older people, younger people, disabled people, and the impact of lived experience of dementia and those who need mental health support. Articles should also consider how neighbourhoods and communities underpin citizens’ welfare, interact with other dimensions of social and economic life, and build capacity to live fulfilled lives. The papers will shed new insights on the challenges of, and potential for, socially inclusive and sustainable activities and policies in housing, with recommendations for increased effectiveness of the housing sector in tackling inequality.
