Dear colleagues
We have some exciting news. We can finally confirm that the Book Sprint on setting up, running and maintaining a Digital Cultural Heritage Innovation Lab is going to happen in September this year!
It will have been almost a year to the day when many of us first met and thought of doing it in Sep, 2018 in London at the British Library (https://goo.gl/X3XpSY). We have kept the momentum going in our work in Copenhagen (Mar-2019 - http://tiny.cc/8vxeaz) and throughout all the various online meetings and other correspondence we have been having. It will also be a great and meaningful output we can present at our next official gathering in Washington at the Library of Congress in May 2020.
We have been very lucky that Milena Dobreva-McPherson (Associate Professor Library and Information Studies UCL Qatar) has been superb in securing the funding for the Sprint. Both of us have been busy working together behind the scenes to make sure it is going to happen between 23-27 September 2019 in Doha, Qatar. The event will be sponsored by UCL Qatar, Qatar University Library and Books Sprint Ltd, which means the whole trip will be paid for (i.e. travel, accommodation and expenses).
What we will need from you is to commit a week of your life to writing the book in Doha without outside distractions. This will be a fantastic opportunity to contribute a Labs legacy that is bigger than all of us. Let’s share our experiences (both awesome and challenging) far and wide so that other organisations don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Here is a useful link from Book Sprints Ltd explaining the process - https://www.booksprints.net/method/ (they will be facilitating and co-sponsoring the event). It’s going to be a lot of hard work, but it will also be a fun, creative, and rewarding process!
Unfortunately, we can’t bring everyone to Doha, though of course we would love to! We have therefore decided to include an application process, for those of you who really want an opportunity to participate in and contribute to the Book Sprint in person.
So, if you would like to be part of this amazing experience, you will need to apply using the online application form (http://tiny.cc/Labs-Book-Sprint) by the deadline midnight BST 5 August 2019. If you have any specific questions before then, please feel free to email me at [log in to unmask]
We will let applicants know by 8 August 2019 if they have been successful. Please note, once successful applicants have been informed, we will very quickly sort out their travel to keep costs down.
If you are not chosen, or simply can’t make it, don’t worry, we will find other ways to get you involved after the book is published. We intend to promote the work as part of ‘International Open access week’ (http://www.openaccessweek.org/) which will take place between 21-27 October 2019. We also want to make sure the book is a ‘living publication’ that will be constantly updated and amended online by all of us in the community to ensure its continued relevance and usefulness to the broader digital cultural heritage sector.
