Subject: Mobilising Psychologists
Hi Annie,
My name is Anna Taylor and I'm the co-founder of UK Student Climate Network which, since its creation in December 2018, has mobilised over 50,000 students across the UK in the UK climate strike movement known as #youthstrike4climate.
Since our first strike on the 15th of February 2019 we have achieved some successes, such as the declaration of a national Climate Emergency and the first cross-party roundtable meeting on climate change in over a decade (which I attended), but following this there has been no decisive government action regarding the climate crisis despite the undeniable reality that if we do not act immediately, it will be too late. As a result, we are calling for our largest mobilisation yet on the 20th of September, we are asking the public to come out on strike alongside school strikers. With unions already getting involved, this has potential to be a massive event with real impact and is being timed to coincide with the UN Summit.
After attending a two day WHO conference regarding health and the climate, I am bringing together a group of medical professionals to both bring further awareness to the consequences of the climate crisis on health, in addition to mobilise large numbers for the 20th of September. In addition to the impacts to physical health such as drought, famine, spread of diseases such as malaria, etc, the climate crisis is having an increasing impact on people's mental health. Awareness is growing around what is described as climate anxiety and climate grief, in addition to the potentially traumatic stresses of future widespread displacement of people as climate refugees and predicted increase in natural disasters. Not only is the climate crisis extremely relevant to the medical professions, but as the most respected professions in society they also have potential to be a large influence in the push for change.
Therefore, I am working with a wide variety of organisations such as WHO and the Red Cross, researchers, medical students, and other professionals to plan our strategy for mobilising these groups for the 20th as well as raising awareness about the severe impact climate change will have on all aspects of health. As of yet, I have very few contacts in those working in mental health such as psychiatrists and psychologists. I was wondering if you would be interested in helping out, or providing some advice about how we can mobilise these groups?
Kind regards,
Anna Taylor.
