Call for Papers for a Thematic Issue “Travelling and travelled
landscapes: Mobilities,
politics and imaginations of tourism”

Guest editors: Dr Maarja Kaaristo and Dr Steven Rhoden (Department of
Marketing, Retail and Tourism; Manchester Metropolitan University; UK.)

Travelling is simultaneously functional and meaningful: it is cultural,
political, embodied, narrated and imagined. The main goal of this thematic
issue is to discuss the tourist experience and mobilities in relation to
various landscapes, which can be experienced in physical, narrated,
mediated and other ways. Tourist landscapes occur through sensory and
affective, as well as discursive and narrated, movement of people,
vehicles, ideas and information. This thematic issue will examine how these
travelling landscapes are experienced, practiced, imagined and performed in
motion in various social and political contexts. We will take a closer look
at the place- and culture-specific mobile practices from running and
walking to travelling on various means of transport such as cars, boats,
trains, bicycles, coaches, planes and others. We are also interested in
discussing the ways culture, society, politics and religion affect and
influence the formation of touristic landscapes.

This call for the thematic issue aims at attracting research notes and full
papers from prospective authors interested in publishing state-of-the-art,
cutting-edge research exploring both the landscapes of travelling, as well
as the travelling of landscapes from multidisciplinary angles. We invite
contributions relating to tourism and leisure studies, events, hospitality,
tourism and sports management, urban studies and planning, geography,
sociology, anthropology, ethnology and other related fields. The issue will
aim to make a contribution to the growing area of mobilities studies by
demonstrating the relevance of this theory to tourism studies; it will also
enhance our understanding of landscapes in terms of tourism and leisure and
will therefore have potential management and governance implications.



In this special thematic issue on ‘Travelling and travelled landscapes:
mobilities, politics and imaginations of tourism’, the guest editors and
the editors of the International Journal of Culture, Tourism and

topics:

-  Embodied and sensory experiences; affect and atmospheres of tourism
landscapes.

-  Rhythms and temporalities of leisure landscapes.

-  Special interest and niche tourism landscapes (food, wine, etc.).

-  Religion, national identities, politics and power relations in
travelling.

-  Travelling to war-torn places and countries.

-  Borders and tourism landscapes.

-  Tourism transport and transport tourism; public transport and tourism.

-  Gendered landscapes of mobilities.

-  Digital and virtual landscapes of tourism (including augmented and
virtual realities) - Experiences of space and place by solo/family/group
travelers.

-  Mobile engagements with the urbanity, rurality and wilderness in
tourism.

-  Representations and narrations of tourism mobilities and tourism
landscapes in cultural texts (art, media, literature, film, etc.).

-  Governance and planning of tourism transport.

-  Managing, developing, marketing and branding the touristic landscapes.

Papers submitted must not have been published, accepted for publication, or
be under review for publication elsewhere.

however, the guest editors will expedite the process to ensure timely
publication.

Submission deadline for full papers:  *20th of October 2019*

First decision for full papers:  1st of December 2019

Revisions and final decision:  February/March 2020

Expected publication of the thematic issue: June/July 2020

Early submissions of research notes and full papers are strongly encouraged
and will be promptly processed by the editors.
