2 fully-funded 4-year PhD projects and 1 3-year post-doctoral researcher position have arisen in Professor Andrew Parnell’s research group at the Hamilton Institute at Maynooth University, County Kildare, Ireland funded by the EU and Science Foundation Ireland.
Project 1: EU Innovar project (1 4-year PhD + 1 Post-doc)Funded as part of the new EU project INNOVAR which aims to deliver new, integrated, user-friendly systems to augment and improve the efficacy and accuracy of European crop variety testing and on-farm decision-making. A key aspect of INNOVAR is the use of new machine learning and statistical tools to analyse large volumes of newly-combined disparate data. INNOVAR is a collaboration between 22 different partners across Europe.
The team working on this project is expected to develop new statistical and machine learning techniques to deal with large genomic data sets of irregular type. This may include Bayesian methods, multivariate responses, missingness mechanisms, longitudinal, and mixed effects type models. A key part of the role will be to travel and liaise with other groups in Europe who are collecting and analysing data in this area.
Project 2: Science Foundation Ireland project on Bayesian machine learning (1 4-year PhD)The student will join a team of researchers working in areas including: Bayesian additive regression trees, multivariate factor models, anomaly detection, and closed-loop control theory. Company partners include IBM and Ascension. Application areas include bioinformatics, climate change and 3D printing.
