Chief Statistician, United Nations Development Programme, New York
The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) produces the annual global Human Development Report (HDR), an editorially independent, analytical and policy-oriented publication anchored in the human development paradigm. It is arguably one of the United Nations’ most important publications. The Human Development Index – which ranks countries development according to their human development, rather than their economic output, is at the heart of each human development report. The index influences international policy debates, decision-making and monitoring and is a leading “Beyond GDP” indicator. It is cited thousands of time each by policy makers, the media and academia.
As Chief Statistician you will oversee the production of the human development indices. You will also lead the HDI’s first significant overhaul since its inception, helping to ensure that 2020 human development measurement better captures today’s key challenges, and – crucially - that our measures influence change for the good of the planet.
As Chief Statistician you will have responsibility for the production and quality of the statistical content of the report. You will lead and manage a small team of professional statisticians. Working under the guidance of the Director, HDRO, and in close collaboration with the rest of the office, the Chief Statistician manages the production of the human development indices and indicator tables, develops effective statistical outreach strategies and engages with statistical offices worldwide, representing both UNDP and HDRO in the international statistical community.
