Hi
In Scotland, technical specifications for the creation of site area polygons, areas of archaeological interest and events have been produced through the SMRForum Technical Working Group and are available at: http://smrforum-scotland.org.uk/shed/data-standards/spatial-data-standards/ acknowledging the INSPIRE Protected Sites technical specifications:
In addition, attribution for any GIS layer should provide the user with the following
- Spatial Discovery metadata: Describes the nature and content of the dataset
- Exploration metadata: The information required to ensure the data is appropriate for purpose
- Exploitation metadata: The information required to access, transfer and apply the data
(Shaw, R., Corns, A. and McAuley J. Archiving Archaeological Spatial Data: Standards and Metadata In the online proceedings of Making History Interactive, CAA 2009, 22-26 March 2009, Wiliamsburg, Virginia, USA: http://archive.caaconference.org/2009/articles/Shaw_Contribution187_c%20(1).pdf )
I am currently looking at requirements to properly document event data created in the course of fieldwork and research as opposed to defining site area extents. Most of this data is created in the private sector without being informed by any standards and the data in formats that are not easily reusable. Currently anyone wanting to reuse this data spends countless hours re-digitising information - often from relatively small scale site plans in pdf reports. For more complex datasets, such as remote sensing data, we need to capture the technical metadata data that allows others understand the resolution the data was captured at to see if the data is appropriate for purpose and where to find the related archive.
Where we want to get to is to provide those creating Event extent data with guidance and a straightforward template to conform to and link it to the project data collected in OASIS / curatorial systems.
We also need to ensure that the mechanisms for sharing that data are considered. That is in the era of Open Data we need to give something back to those creating the data though the curation, collation and dissemination of that data.
Best wishes
Peter
