Dear Colleagues,
We are inviting science journalists / science writers to a workshop on the day prior to the World Conference for Science Journalists (WCSJ) in Lausanne (CH), 1st July 2019, and are able to offer travel stipends (including the conference fees).
We are looking forward to discussing with the journalism community, whether we may need to look further beyond merely reporting science to placing it in a wider context: Just as researchers are now encouraged to look beyond their ‘bubble’ and conduct transdisciplinary research, so too perhaps science journalists should look beyond the science they report, and relate to broader issues of society and economy, focusing critically on the ethical and social implications of different fields of research and innovation. If there is a science journalism bubble, how do we make the bubble more porous?
In a 3-hour workshop on 1st July 2019, we invite the community to engage with media scholars and practitioners from different areas of expertise and perspectives to discuss these issues.
A transdisciplinary approach to explore transdisciplinarity.
I am excited to say that we are able to offer travel stipends which also include the registration fees for the World Conference itself! You will need to be fast, however: We are very much looking forward to your applications by 7th June.
Let me furthermore encourage everyone to consider joining the WCSJ field trips to Zurich. Being a bit further away from the conference venue (a 2-hours train ride) these trips, Zurich is home to some of the most renowned universities in continental Europe (ETH, Zurich University) and research facilities (such as the Paul Scherrer Institute, boasting a third-generation synchrotron light source, or the IBM Research Lab which has one of very few quantum computers in Europe). Zurich is also Switzerland's major hub for intercontinental flights, so it’s a good travel option for intercontinental travelers. Their return train fare from Lausanne to Zürich would be covered by WCSJ as part of the field trip, and they also offer discounted hotel accommodation in Zürich so you could spend your last night (July 5) there.
Best wishes
Alex
