Dear All

Thanks very much for the responses to my query about engaging non clinical teams with library services with a focus on HR and Finance as a starting point. I have had some very useful replies which will help a lot with my improvement project. I have also had a lot of requests to share replies and respondents are happy for me to do so:

A few said they had struggled particularly with these specific teams. Some finding HR literature searches hard due to limited resources. Others pointed out that even just sending reports through to Finance directors or promoting that we can get books on interlibrary loan for finance staff was a win. Other replies are as follows:

"We're in a small community trust, but we do plenty of work for the non-clinical teams, particularly HR (not finance so much at all - although two finance managers come to our book club and borrow our fiction collections)

For HR, we do work to support:-

Recruitment and retention initiatives (best practice) OD / system wide working Support for health and wellbeing project group We've also supported the bullying and harassment officers with their stat mand training presentation

I suspect very few of them use the resources themselves ...... it's the service that we provide that definitely wins the brownie points with these teams ...."

"I am looking to do an information needs analysis of our Managers this year as our user group stats show that we don't have many on board with us or use our services. We have Quality Improvement Half Days in our Trust where teams spend 1/2 day looking at QI within their teams. I have offered to do some facilitation work around team building using the games we have in the library".

I had a couple of detailed responses the first is from Carol- Ann Regan of Musgrove Park Hospital and the second from Susan Smith of Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who are both quite involved with their HR services:

"The library service here sits within People Services which incorporates HR, recruitment, temp staffing, OD, wellbeing.
I sit on the senior team so I have lots on input.
The library is mentioned within our People Strategy.

In terms of engaging with this group, I recently presented at a Band 7 leaders away day. This was really well received and has results in searches and queries plus new members.
I focused the presentation on some problems they may encounter with how the library could help rather than just listing our resources.

Most of these departments have team meeting so you could try to attend one of these.
KM is really a good way in for these teams. They really liked the idea of Knowledge Harvesting and the leavers toolkit.

KnowledgeShare was also popular

I also used accessing health information for their own health"

and

"We are embedded into the Workforce side of the Trust. I meet regularly with senior members of the HR Team.

We are running a Human Library event alongside HR, recently helped to set up communities of practice on Teams, we do knowledge assets to support systems leadership and OD function, get various literature searches associated with HR & Health & Wellbeing. We do a lot to support Health & Wellbeing Committee which links to HR and also link into projects associated with equality & diversity. John copied in does an HR bulletin and is probably best placed for impact case studies or copies of recent evidence summaries.

We are trialling Ebsco Business Complete Online to support searches for HR & Finance (just started so no data). We lend Skype equipment to support interviews and MDT meetings, latest kit tested by the Board yesterday. I am tasked under their strategy to develop a learning organisation and to deliver on the Topol review. So KMb is important. We might be starting an Ask an Expert service with HR to improve knowledge capture when people leave."

Kind regards
Louisa Fulbrook
