Ok TurboVNC worked to get me in nicely (after updating Java) but I'm having different errors now, that seem more python-related. See below:

We've also messed with our ~/.vnc/xstartup trying things (and then reverting back) but no go in that department (but we could've been doing the wrong things)
Thoughts? Should we have updated to Ubuntu 18 instead of 16? We were trying to be conservative, nervous about things breaking from updates :-/
