I know that work has been done at TRL which shows that switching off engines on older cars is not the best option. It depends on ambient temp etc. The problem is that the catalyst cools down and is then not as efficient until it warms up again.

Subject: Anti-idling - You might need to keep your engine on
Happy Clean Air Day everybody!
So we've been doing some social media posts today and getting the anti idling message out there - however, we've had a few people sight this recent article which seems to be suggesting that we can idle for 10 minutes before it's better to switch off and on again.

I know this research is flawed on a number of levels (it's based on a single vehicle, 8 years old with an unknown service history and partly sponsored by BP for starters), but does anybody know of any better research that we can quote in return. I can't believe that with all the anti-idling campaigns out there, there isn't at least some data to back them all up.
Or is this article correct and we all wasting our time??? Lets hope not.
Many thanks
Matt
