Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw your attention to a few events that are taking place as part of the AHRC follow-on project 'Testimony in Practice' and which may be of interest to some of you. As part of the project, I have been working with the Catalan theatre company 'La Conquesta del Pol Sud' (LCPS) and the Romanian/German author Carmen-Francesca Banciu. Together they are writing a play about Banciu's life as a dissident in communist Romania, her journey from Bucharest to Berlin in 1990, and her experience of the transition to liberal democracy. She will perform her story on stage herself and alongside her daughter Meda Gheorghiu-Banciu, who is a professional actor. The play will be in English.
The team are currently rehearsing in Berlin and have arranged two open rehearsals on the 21 June and 30 June in Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte. Both events will include a discussion session around the themes of socialism, biography, testimony and art. You can find more information and details of how to register on our website: https://testimonyinpractice.bham.ac.uk/workshops/
You can also find more information on the play and the process of making it here: https://testimonyinpractice.bham.ac.uk/theatre/
The play will premiere on the 6 July at the Birmingham European (BE) Festival. Tickets are available here: http://befestival.org/events/land-full-of-heroes-by-la-conquesta-del-pol-sud-uk-german-spanish-romanian-70-mins/
We expect it to sell out, so get yours early!
Finally, alongside the theatre performance, a second dimension of the project is the collection of 'testimonies' from Central and Eastern Europeans living in the UK about communism, 1989, moving to the UK and life here since. This would include people who lived in the former GDR or have family members who did so. There is no set format; we are looking for short personal or family memories (single events or impressions), anecdotes (something that stands out as an important experience), snippets, and political reflections. Please do contribute and/or share with anyone who might be interested in doing so. You can read the pieces gathered so far and add your own here: https://testimonyinpractice.bham.ac.uk/testimonies/
The campaign will run until the 31 July, at which point we will be working with the Central and Eastern European Arts space, Centrala, to develop a sound-art installation based on the material. The installation will be shown in Birmingham and London in the autumn of 2019.
