PhD position in theoretical physics/chemistry: Nonlinear X-Ray Raman Scattering
Within our newly established Cluster of Excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter” of the Universität Hamburg, DESY, the European XFEL and the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (https://www.cui-advanced.uni-hamburg.de/) we offer a PhD position in theoretical AMO physics/ theoretical chemistry.
X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) sources offer unprecedented opportunities for studying chemical reaction dynamics and measuring electron dynamics at as and fs time-scales. In one of the projects of CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter we want to apply nonlinear x-ray spectroscopy to unravel coupled electron and nuclear motion.
The successful candidate will develop theory of nonlinear resonant stimulated x-ray Raman scattering for molecular systems. In particular, the candidate will extend existing quantum chemistry methods to predict vibronic wave packets that are induced by stimulated x-ray Raman scattering. The challenge lies in keeping track of both nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom and to predict the maintenance and decoherence of electron wave packets that are initiated by stimulated x-ray Raman scattering. In a second step the candidate will develop the concept of nonlinear pump-probe schemes (nonlinear stimulated x-ray Raman scattering and quantum-beat Auger spectroscopy) and will predict spectral probe signals. The work will be in close collaboration with experimentalists, to guide future experiments at x-ray free-electron lasers.
We offer PhD research at a vivid research campus in Hamburg (CFEL, DESY, UHH, MPSD) and membership in the graduate school of the cluster of excellence CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter.
Candidates should have completed their physics or chemistry studies (Master degree or equivalent) and have a background in theoretical atomic, molecular and optical physics, theoretical solid-state physics or theoretical quantum chemistry. Programming skills (Fortran or C++) would be advantageous. The candidate should have a strong interest in collaborating with experimentalists and should have strong communication skills and excellent command in spoken and written English.
