Hi everyone,
I am currently undertaking my MA dissertation on the topic of offensive language in archival description, and it would be very helpful if some of you could complete the short survey found via the following link:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdFDeu4fTbTthl3xByg_592EJQSk4bJtHoawDLZTUHBeM-4nw/viewform?usp=sf_link
The focus of my research is the potential conflict between the principal of archival integrity (representing the past honestly and accurately) and the growing desire for the archive sector to include marginalised groups within their target audience. Archives across the world contain language relating to these groups which is no longer acceptable to modern society. In turn, these words appear frequently in online catalogues and risk offending and alienating the groups for whom the words are derogatory. My work particularly centres on language relating to sexuality, mental health and lifestyle, as the majority of the work conducted so far on this topic has focused on racist language and my desire is to branch out the discussion to other areas.
The survey should take no more than 5 - 10 minutes of your time and all responses are anonymous (Google Forms does not collect any personal data). I understand that some of the responses to the questions are quite restrictive and arbitrary, so if there is anything you would like to discuss further, please get in touch at [log in to unmask]
Thank you for your time,
Tim Jerrome
