Sport and Jewish Identity
Recent international and UK specific incidents of anti-Semitism have prompted a renewed interest in issues of Jewish identity within British society. However, sport rarely features in those political or academic debates. This research will inform what part sport participation plays in the construction of Jewish identities. It will do so by acknowledging the diversity within ‘Jewishness’ (e.g. gender, secular/reform/orthodox/ultra-orthodox, temporal shifts), and should be informed by an appreciation of analogous processes in other ethnic groupings. The PhD lends itself to a range of theoretical perspectives, though we believe that qualitative research techniques are likely to be especially revealing.
