The MNI brain is a little larger than an average brain. The attached figure shows how SPM will resize the ICBM 152 Nonlinear atlases version 2009 brain (gray) relative to the original supplied by the MNI. I have scalp stripped the images after normalization to show the difference. As I recall, if you read one of the original MNI articles, they mention the averaging method used causes a slight dilation. In general, SPM will normalize brains to have a typical size, but this is slightly smaller than the MNI template. The difference is not large, but it is consistent.
