II Luso-Brazilian Colloquium on Theory and History of Geography. 
Our Classics: geography’s texts and authors in Portugal and Brazil.

The II Luso-Brazilian Colloquium on Theory and History of Geography will be dedicated to the study of the classics of our discipline in Portugal and Brazil and the significance of their legacy for the subsequent generations of geographers. We define “our” classics as the works that were able to withstand the test of time and remain relevant in very diverse contexts, due to their scientific and literary quality. These are the works that have grounded modern geography in Portuguese since the beginning of the nineteenth century. In this sense, this call welcomes papers on classic texts and authors that had a relevant contribution to the establishment of geography’s identity and practice in Portugal and Brazil.

We welcome papers that analyse and discuss geographic literature from the nineteenth and twentieth century. In this sense, we are as open to discuss works and authors that predate the late institutionalization of geography in Brazilian and Portuguese universities in the first decades of the twentieth century, as the many works that have been published ever since. Likewise, we are as much interested in papers that approach unpublished, lesser known or not as widely distributed works that nevertheless are particularly relevant for the history of geographic practice, as in papers that discuss the most popular classics. The papers on the intellectual trajectories of classic authors should highlight the canonical topics of their works, and aspects related to the authors’ training, scientific ideas, personality, and the impact of their thinking in the discipline. We especially welcome papers that address the publication or the circulation of works of Portuguese geographers in Brazil, or Brazilian geographers in Portugal, such as those that were targeted to geographical pedagogy. 

The Luso-Brazilian Colloquiums on Theory and History of Geography are a scientific event that takes place biennially in Portugal and Brazil. The first event took place at the Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal in November, 2017. This second edition will take place in Brasília, and it is co-organized by the Geography Department of the Universidade de Brasília (GEA | UnB) and the Centre for Geographical Studies of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the Universidade de Lisboa (CEG-IGOT | ULisboa). The Colloquiums are an exciting opportunity to gather a significant number of researchers from Portugal and Brazil that work on the history of geography, but also researchers from other nationalities that have an interest in the history of the discipline in Lusophone countries.

The event will be divided into six thematic axes:

1. Works and authors prior to the institutionalization of geography at universities
2. The classics of geographic schools
3. The classics beyond the schools: autonomous works and paths
4. External views: studies on Portugal and Brazil by foreign geographers
5. Geographic publications: journals, conference proceedings, and bibliographic collections
6. The geographic works of “non-geographers”


Preliminary program

The Inaugural Session will take place in November 6, 2019, at the Portuguese Embassy in Brasília, with the presence of the Ambassador of Portugal in Brazil, Dr. Jorge Cabral.

We are delighted to announce that plenary talks will be given by Teresa Barata-Salgueiro (Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal) and Pedro Almeida de Vasconcelos (Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil).

The full programme will be announced in September 6, 2019. 


Guidelines for proposals

Paper proposals must be submitted until June 15, 2019 to the email [log in to unmask] The abstracts should follow the guidelines below:

The proposals must include: title, author, affiliation and email, keywords (max: 5), and main thematic axis.
The proposals must be submitted in a MS Word file (.doc or .docx). 
Abstracts must be between 6000 and 7000 characters (with spaces) and should not include a reference list.
We accept proposals in English and Portuguese.
Each author can submit – individually or in co-authorship – a maximum of two proposals.
Only the papers that are presented at the Colloquium will be considered for publication in the proceedings. In the case of papers in co-authorship, at least one of the authors must attend the event.
