Dear all,
Apologies for cross posting. I wanted to bring to your attention this collaborative project (between myself and a graphic artist from Bangladesh Najmunnahar Keya) bringing ethnography and visual art together in the form of the graphic novel (in Bangla and English) to reflect on ethical ways of documenting sexual violence during conflict. This is a free online resource and can be downloaded.
Entitled “Birangona,” after the title awarded (six days after the war ended and globally unprecedented till date) by the Government of Bangladesh to women raped in the Bangladesh war of 1971, the graphic novel provides guidelines on the paradoxes of collecting ethical testimonies of sexual violence during conflicts.
Birangona is based on the research findings in my book, “The Spectral Wound: Sexual Violence, Public Memories, and the Bangladesh War of 1971”, (2015, Duke University Press; 2016 Zubaan) and highlights the historical trajectory of the public memories of sexual violence during the Bangladesh war of 1971 through an inter generational story with a set of guidelines on how to (or how not to) ethically record testimonies.
The guidelines and graphic novel are meant for children 12 years and above as well as for academics/professionals teaching about and collecting testimonies of sexual violence. It is available to download here:
