At Derby we insist that students have their 'preferred' email set to their institutional address and that is how we communicate formally with them, however we do also allow them to record a 'personal' email address (which they can maintain themselves) and obviously we can't really stop them from contacting us using their personal email address.

At Cardiff University we require students to monitor their intuitional email as this is a way we will convey important information to them.  We don't expect them to use their institutional email to correspond with us, but we do expect them to read what we send them.  We also advise that they can set up this email to forward to another account to make sure they get them.



We also ask for their personal email address and usually send any correspondence to both addresses.  We have an online task where they can update their own contact information.
