An exciting opportunity exists for a PhD position in machine learning. The research aims to develop the next generation of autonomous robots that are able to inspect pipes. Knowledge of Bayesian methods for sensor data fusion, mapping and multiple robot cooperation is expected. A particular focus of the project will be on spatio-temporal methods such as Kriging, known also as Gaussian process regression, Bayesian Convolutional Networks and other methods able to work under uncertainties.
The PhD research is aligned with the EPSRC funded Pipebots platform grant: http://pipebots.ac.uk/.

Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) is the largest department devoted to systems and control engineering in the UK and amongst the largest in Europe. It comprises 31 academic staff, 29 research staff, 30 support staff and over 400 undergraduate and postgraduate students. We are an internationally leading research department and have a vibrant research culture spanning systems and control theory and its increasingly challenging applications in, for example, aerospace, manufacturing and autonomous systems. The Department provides a research environment that strongly supports the needs of each member, we invest in people and value multi-disciplinarily.
