Dear all,
We are inviting papers for our panel on Two Wheel Mobilitiesin Southeast Asia.
Call for papers – https://euroseas2019.org/program/panels/two-wheel-mobilities
EUROSEAS 2019 conference website – https://euroseas2019.org/
Deadline – 15 May 2019
The time when the desire to own a bicycle was displaced bythe rise of motor scooters has long passed in Southeast Asia. Yet, even with agreater range of options for modes of travel, bicycles and motor scootersremain popular but arguably diurnal forms of transport. Conceptually driven bythe interdisciplinary ‘new mobilities’ paradigm, this panel aims to explore thefuture of two wheel mobilities in Southeast Asia. The panel is open to allacademic disciplinary backgrounds and especially phenomenological, sensory andnarrative methodological approaches. We invite authors to focus on newmobilities phenomena of the obvious choices of bicycles and motor scooters ofmetropolitan commuting, village movement and rural transport, or to take a stepbeyond to explore other mobilities such as elite competitive cycling, ‘cyclo’and other human-powered load bearing machines, ‘bentor’ and other people movers, wheelchairs and improvised machines that enable people with disability toexperience mobility, disruptive three wheel machines, and so on. To what extentdoes the future of two wheel mobilites connect with the past, memory andprevious experiences? How does it feel to travel by two wheels? What sensationsare experienced or dulled? How does two wheel travel mark, transform or injurethe body? How does the body experience the natural world and built environmentwhen going on two wheels? How do infrastructural developments enable, inhibitor transform two wheel mobilities? What emotions are shaped by two wheel travel? How are strangers encountered? For example, on a motor scooter taxi? Or rideshare? How is street crime entangled with motor scooters? What other informaleconomic activity is enabled by two wheel mobilities?
