The team
You will join a multi-disciplinary team of research scientists and consultants located across the UK. The post holder will work within the Informatics group but will be expected to bridge across to the modelling, crop physiology/ protection, soil, policy & economics, sustainable food & farming and ecology groups within ADAS, as well as more widely within RSK. The core elements of the Informatics group’s expertise are (i) digital data collection; (ii) remote sensing data sourcing and utilisation; (iii) data management; (iv) data analysis; (v) GIS analysis; (vi) cartographic services and (vii) software development and programming. Examples of common project themes include catchment management; precision farming applications; yield enhancement; input use efficiency (e.g. nutrients and pesticides); land use and land use change; land management; ecology; planning constraints and environmental policy. We work with governments and their Agencies, utility companies, universities and innovation funders to identify, develop and implement practical solutions to support a wide range of environmental challenges for a wide range of end users.
The role
We require a consultant with the knowledge and drive to further develop our business in the area of remote sensing applications. The role will include achieving sales targets, delivering projects and working with colleagues from different sectors.
What you will be doing
• Leading and assisting colleagues with developing new proposals, including multi-collaborative bids, for funding research and consultancy projects related to remote sensing.
• Delivering projects and managing all commercial aspects, including the deployment of resource.
• Sourcing, analysing and interpreting remote sensing datasets from satellite, aircraft or UAV.
• Working with colleagues in other sectors to obtain insights from these datasets that can be applied to real world problems.
• Distilling project findings into key messages and tools for clients and tailoring these to end users.
• Providing other technical expertise to colleagues such as GIS analysis, data management and modelling.
• Developing the profile of the ADAS capability through platform speaking, publishing in peer reviewed journals and popular press articles.

The successful candidate will:
• Demonstrate knowledge of using remote sensing data (ideally also GIS analysis) to meet client needs.
• Apply their knowledge, underpinned by scientific understanding, to manage and deliver projects that meet the client’s requirements and produce robust, credible scientific data/information.
• Demonstrate strong ability for analysing and organising large, complex datasets.
• Grow business opportunities and achieve sales targets by developing effective working relationships with clients, project funders and collaborators.
• Ensure that projects are planned, managed and led to achieve project objectives within the agreed timescale and budget.
• Write client reports, scientific papers and bids that are clear, logical and persuasive, meeting the needs of clients and achieving the communication objective for ADAS.
• Communicate effectively with a range of audiences to transfer the knowledge gained. This will include speaking at project meetings, presenting to conferences of scientists and/or practitioners and writing technical articles.
• Recognise and understand the team’s aims and objectives and participate fully in achieving these with team members by adapting your own input to suit the needs of the team.
What we require
• At Consultant level it is expected that you will be qualified to at least degree level in a remote sensing related discipline, ideally with an environmental science angle.
• You will have a good understanding of the generation and application of remote sensing and other spatial data and have excellent numeracy and data analysis skills.
• You will have a good understanding of the challenges facing agriculture and the environment and be able to demonstrate your enthusiasm and ability for identifying, selling and delivering profitable new projects to ADAS.
• Valid UK driving licence
• A strong ‘can do’ attitude with flexibility and willingness to take on a wide range of challenges.
• Flexibility – as there will be a need for travel within the UK and occasionally in Europe and further afield.
