And they make extremely good points. The DSSLG produced a report urging Inclusive Education a few years ago - not these authorised institutional and governmental barriers !
Physical Steps are still being built everywhere, just as the metaphorical steps are still enforced.
Thankfully the £300-600 charge for a dyslexia assessment has been rendered unnecessary as an assessment at any age is now acceptable evidence for a Disabled Student Allowance.
But the process of getting a Disabled Student Allowance is still incredibly long, tortuous and discouraging. I’m sure it could be simplified.
But also there are changes that HEIs could make that would make education more accessible and inclusive. The tremendous work being done by this group is a great example of goodwill and understanding.
Lecturers could be given a formal induction that focused on inclusive practice, and inclusive assessment methods. Currently there is no requirement for any training in teaching or lecturing which seems bizarre?
The professional standards framework has been examined by my PhD student who finds no reference to inclusive education within it - so even those taking PGCHE or PgCAP or FHEA may not get a decent introduction to inclusive practice?
Don’t get me started on physical steps .....
Keep up the great work colleagues in this group. Assistive technology is one of the great ramps forward for many Disabled students

We’re all aware of the need to provide ramps instead of steps but when it comes to support for disabled students the current system is more like a step than a ramp.
You’re either eligible for DSA or you’re not. You either go through the rigmarole (and potential expense) of assessment and application or you get no support – even though the tools and technologies in most organisations have the potential for providing significant support opportunities.
This first of two guest posts from AbilityNet explores the issues and makes some recommendations. In all the busyness of adapting to the Digital Accessibility regulations it’s crucial to recognise that the advice and guidance we give disabled students is fundamental to their success – please have a read!
