Hi all,
Just to give a heads up and reminder to keep the date Tuesday 14 May 2019 12:30-13:30. This webinar is a free online event for senior leaders in Further and Higher education. This informational webinar will be particularly beneficial for quality managers and governors who have responsibility for oversight of deliver of teaching and learning.
The information is now up on the Jisc website here - https://www.jisc.ac.uk/training/web-accessibility-for-leaders.
The Web accessibility for leaders - Webinar is designed to increase awareness of the upcoming responsibilities to make websites accessible.
We are of the view that although many institutions have taken steps to prepare for and comply with the new legal obligation there remains a large number of institutions that are not yet engaging. This is an opportunity to reach senior managers in institutions and to raise awareness of their legal obligations. It is also an opportunity to provide some clarity on the steps they are required to take now to be compliant in time for the deadlines that are fast approaching.
Please do pass on the details to managers and decision makers and I would value your assistance in getting news of this webinar to the right people.
All assistance is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
John X Kelly

I think pragmatism is important but the key element you DO need to consider fixing in archives is anything that is 'essential for administration of the service' (the wording is something like that - sorry can't check it at the moment).
The one thing that springs to mind from a conversation yesterday is past exam papers. I think it would be easy to argue that past exam papers were a part of the archive that was essential for students to access in order to prepare for current exams.
That should be a relatively minor task compared to other VLE content but it might be one most likely to attract attention since every student may want to look at those at some point.

At Jisc we work flexibly - so whilst it suits me to email now, I do not expect a response or action outside of your own working hours. Also, please note I use voice recognition. It can introduce creative (but entirely erroneous) interpretations. Apologies if I failed to spot any.

Hi again
It seems to me that Piers' advice to add fixing the content in the VLE Archive to the plan as a low priority item is pragmatic.
Our archive is there for students for reference purposes after their modules have finished - so a third year student might dip back into it to see content from their first or second years.
The archive is as full of content as the main VLE so fixing it all would involve the same (i.e. huge) amount of effort but in reality it is visited very little in comparison with the live service. We need to prioritise fixing the content in the live VLE and time spent fixing the archive is time taken away from the live service. Therefore I'd say it would involve a disproportionate amount of effort to fix the Archive too (and it would be tempting just to turn it off rather than fixing it - the baby-with-bathwater scenario we want to avoid).

Hello,
It depends on how the archive versions are used. If they will not be used as course or learning content again, but only as reference for staff, they would indeed not need to be until Sept 2020 (where the "and all existing content" type clause of the regs comes in). Unless of course the staff who didn't create the content need to use that content.
Perhaps the best approach would be to add it as an item (if it actually will ever be used) to your overarching strategic plan, just have it as a very low priority item.
Thanks,
Piers Wilkinson

Dear all
I have been asked to confirm whether our archived versions of our VLE service fall under the scope of the new regulations. As this will be a snapshot of the VLE content as it stands in July 2019 (i.e. before Sept 23rd 2019) I am pretty sure it will not be in scope.
Would appreciate a second opinion, however…
