The School of Social Sciences, Singapore Management University, invites applications for one full-time Research Fellow (RF) position. The successful applicant will conduct research connected to the Ministry of Education Tier 2 funded research project, “New Religious Pluralisms in Singapore: Migration, Integration and Difference”, led by Dr Orlando Woods and Professor Lily Kong.
The project will explore how migrants representing different religious groups (Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Sikh) integrate into Singapore society, and the role of religion (and religious organisations) therein. It will also explore the role of digital technologies in (dis)enabling integration. The project will be qualitative in nature, and will involve a digital research component. As much of the work will be interdisciplinary in scope, geographers and those from cognate academic backgrounds (such as sociology, urban studies, area studies or anthropology) are welcome to apply.
The positions will be based in Singapore, with an intended start date of July 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will be tenable for 12 months in the first instance, renewable for up to another 24 months (36 months in total), subject to satisfactory review.
The RF will work closely with the PI to manage and execute the project. The job scope involves:
• Conducting primary qualitative research amongst migrants, non-migrants and religious leaders in Singapore
• Analysing qualitative data, and working with the PI and Co-I to conceptualise and draft papers for publication (the RF will be expected to lead the writing of 1-2 of these papers)
• Presenting the research findings at international conferences
• Assisting the PI with the administrative management of the project
The successful applicant will ideally have:
• Excellent qualitative research skills (with proven experience conducting in-depth interviews)
• Excellent written communication skills (demonstrated through their published work)
• A demonstrated interest in issues related to religion, migration and identity
• Experience working in (Southeast) Asia
• Language skills in Mandarin and/or the Chinese dialects spoken in Singapore (useful, but not a pre-requisite)
• A doctorate degree by the date of appointment
Competitive salary and full benefits will be provided. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified, and the position will remain open until filled. Please note that the successful applicant will be asked to provide two letters of recommendation before confirmation of the appointment.
To apply, please send a full CV and an introductory cover email to Orlando Woods: [log in to unmask]
