I'm hoping somebody might have a good idea how to sort out a little problem.
We need to undertake some ambient air quality monitoring for a permitted industrial site in the northeast. The site surface treats metals using solutions containing Cr (VI). The process baths are lip extracted to atmosphere (for H&S reasons).
This all sounds easy, but the issue is the Environmental Assessment Level for Cr (VI) has been considerably reduced since the permit was issued:
• H1 Guidance (2003) – Cr VI Long-term EAL 0.1 µg/m3
• H1 Guidance (2008) – Cr VI Long-term EAL 0.1 µg/m3
• Air emissions risk assessment (2018) - Chromium VI, oxidation state in the PM10 fraction – Long-term EAL 0.0002 µg/m3
At the current time the UK Heavy Metals Network undertake monitoring for Cr (total) but don’t speciate for Cr (VI). I’ve contacted NPL who run the UK Heavy Metals Network for Defra and they can’t help with Cr (VI) and can’t see how we can estimate Cr (VI) from a Cr (total) assessment. All the other labs are struggling with the LoD. The output from the monitoring will be used within a revised environmental assessment/dispersion model.
Any ideas who could undertake an ambient air Cr (VI) analysis (ng/m3 range)?? Any thoughts are appreciated?
