Dear Ana,

in Slovakia is now FL compulsory from third grade - it is from cca 8
years. It is right now a discussion if it should be English language or
also others Languages (German, Fraincs...). But 8 ears ago we had
English learning compulsory from 6 years (first grade). It was changed
in last years, but there is still facultative in some schools English in
the first grade. And also you may find English courses in pre-primary
schools (in most of them). About pre-primary second language education
wrote Zuzana Portiková in the book Early Years Second Language Education
edited by Sandie Mourao and Monica Lourenco.

Best wishes

Zlatica

> Dear Ana. To the best of my knowledge it is still only Cyprus and Malta whet FLs are compulsory from 3 years (a colonial legacy of English), plus the autonomous regions of Spain where a regional language may be introduced from 3 years (though possibly not always compulsory). I understand that the previous government in Poland did plan to make FLs compulsory from 3 years but the new government cancelled it. I believe it’s currently compulsory from 5 years now - the so-called ‘pre-school’ category in many countries. It would be great to hear if anyone has updates on compulsory policy. The private sector often starts much earlier of course! Best/ Janet
