Hi Will,
Please don't judge the background and the colour of the scale. That was the project requirement.

Most of the collection already had labels but there was a large amount of material for which we had to print some labels for and write the classmarks by hand for each fragment. Sure you can find more discrete colours of the paper.
Cheers

Subject: Scales and object numbers
Hi Everyone,
I bet this one’s come around a few times in the past so sorry to be the stuck record…
I’m not really a fan of including object numbers and scales in images as their cons seem to far outweigh the pros. However, it is a requirement for our small fossil project to include both.
Can anyone recommend small (1-5cm), discrete scales and methods for including object numbers? I don’t want to impact the resolution over the subject too much and I don’t want it to be a white/multicoloured eyesore next to a muted grey and black image.
For a scale I’m thinking of using the side of an xrite mini colourchecker (I’ve attached an image). This looks suitably minimal! We’re looking for a really discrete way of displaying a short object number, say ‘GEO/15’, alongside this scale. We can not use digital annotations as it is a requirement to have it in the raw file. I want to avoid cutting little bits of paper and sliding them into a clear plastic holder. This has been our method for shoes and it now seems to me that it doesn’t match the precision of the image as the paper isn’t always absolutely straight and the clear holders look foggy with the lights at certain angles.
Any ideas would be extremely welcome!
Thank you,
Will
