THE FILMS OF JEAN-MARIE STRAUB AND DANIÈLE HUILLET
1 MARCH – 1 JUNE 2019
First Complete UK Retrospective
In cooperation with numerous prestigious partners, the Goethe-Institut London is pleased to present the first complete UK retrospective of the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, who crafted one of the most influential and controversial oeuvres in modern cinema together. Working in West Germany, Italy and France, their films have been a crucial presence in European cinema since the 1960s. Politically engaged, aesthetically rigorous and hugely influential, Straub and Huillet have stirred as much controversy as they have sought collaboration, dialogue and friendships.
Their work will be shown in digitally restored copies or new 35mm prints, all with English subtitles. Introductions, workshops and talks will offer different takes on their aesthetic and political concerns and provide a chance to revisit the literature, music and art on which their films are based.
Screenings and events will take place at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), BFI Southbank, King’s College London, Goethe-Institut London, Ciné Lumière, Close-Up, Birkbeck Cinema and Whitechapel Gallery.
