Picking this up again after a few days out of the office... thanks very much to all for their responses.
> (GJ) If the older edition is on a reading list , we would simply advise the academic of the availability of newer editions (we identify this via TARL Reviews so we are constantly providing that feedback each semester when a newer edition is available).
I would like to query your use of the word "simply" there if that's OK! :-)
How do your staff do this? Do they take a note of every time a new edition pops up or is purchased via Reviews notifications, and send this in an email to the academic?
Thank you for your link to your deselection policy document. That's very helpful.
> (HR) Weeding is the responsibility of the Academic Liaison Librarians (though whenever a new edition arrives in stock, we get an alert from Content Services/Metadata pointing out that there are x older editions and where they are, and encouraging us to weed them).... / In terms of the reading lists, again how ALLs handle this depends on the subject and their relationship with their academics. Some would contact the academic and ask first before updating the edition on the list
So are your content services team divorced from the process of weeding entirely, apart from the notification process?
Do you have a system to ensure that the old editions are actually weeded by the ALLs? And then do they delete the LMS records, or is that part of the process bounced back to your Content Services team?
> (DS) I actually did a bit of work last year on how many new editions our assistants actually found when checking every single entry every single time in Talis Reviews. The results were miniscule.
Would you be willing to share your methodology for this?
> (DS) At the moment I'm looking at a list of 5000 titles bookmarked heavily on Reading Lists, I think I have a list of 96 titles from suppliers where there's a new edition available.
Did you just send the data to the suppliers for them to do the checking for you? Can I ask which supplier you are using?
Thanks again,
Kevin
