CFP The emerging geo(-)politics of seabed mining
2019 People and the Sea Conference, Amsterdam, 25-28 June 2019
Panel organisers:
Dr John Childs (Lancaster University, [log in to unmask]) and Rosanna Carver (Lancaster University, [log in to unmask])
The depletion of onshore minerals, alongside technological advances, has led to a resurgence of interest in the exploration and exploitation of reserves located at the seabed. Concurrently, global and national discourses of the blue economy and blue growth speak of the development potential of seabed mining as a viable industry (Winder and Le Heron 2017: UNECA 2016). This panel at the 2019 MARE People and the Sea Conference X, Amsterdam will critically engage with the emerging geo (-) politics of seabed mining. Many uncertainties pertain to marine-based mining, wrought by legislative ambiguity and the complex (geo)physical nature of the sea and proposed operations. These extractive projects also have the potential to conflict with traditional actors in the marine sphere including, but not limited to, artisanal and industrial fishing.
We invite a variety of perspectives to explore the emerging politics and geopolitical challenges of seabed mining, contributing to related debates on ensuing contestations, rights, governance, and space. Interested participants should send an abstract of no more than 300 words to both John Childs ([log in to unmask]) and Rosanna Carver ([log in to unmask]) no later than 28 March 2019. In addition to the abstract, please include the title of the paper, the author’s name, affiliation, and email.
