Subject: research opportunity for the RACE group of the RGS
Dear colleagues,
Please circulate as widely as possible.
The Race, Culture and Ethnicity (RACE) group of the Royal Geographical Society (see https://raceingeography.org/ ) is commissioning an impact evaluation report, which will be launched at our pre-conference event on 27th August, 2019, which this year will be held at the Black Cultural Archives (BCA). This report, based mainly on desk-based research, will briefly document the contributions of the UK's black-focused archives, including BCA, not only to the work of individual researchers across disciplines and particularly in Geography, but also more broadly to teaching and to the establishment of new academic approaches. This research aims to stimulate a future research agenda, which will map and evaluate the foundational resources available to decolonial, anti-racist and BME scholarship in the UK, and to assess their sustainability at a time of ongoing austerity.
Call for expressions of interest
The RACE group is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to spend around three days researching the impact of black-focused archives on decolonial, anti-racist and BME scholarship in the UK. The research will be mainly desk-based, reviewing existing research on the sector, but will also involve a small number of digital or telephone interviews with key voices in the black-focused archival sector. It will also involve writing a short report that the researcher will present at the RACE group pre-conference event. It is anticipated that this research will take up only 3-4 days of the postdoctoral researcher's time.
The RACE group committee will act as an advisory board in relation to the research, and will support the researcher wherever possible. However, this is a self-employed role, and we do expect the researcher to be self-managing and independent in their organisation of the tasks in hand. The RACE group expects to receive the finished report by 1st July 2019.
The one-off fee for this work (including research, writing and presentation) is £500. This fee includes any expenses incurred during the research process, but travel expenses specifically to the pre-conference event for the presentation can be negotiated.
Person specification
This opportunity is open to researchers who have already received their PhD in a relevant area of research, and who come equipped with a thorough understanding and experience of the academic impact of the black-focused archival sector. Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they are able to:
* devise, organise and carry out research to a high standard, both desk-based and through interviews;
* critically analyse and discuss research material;
* write articulately and concisely, with attention to detail;
* work to deadlines;
* deliver a clear and articulate oral presentation about their research.
Application process
Individuals wishing to apply to carry out this research should email the following documents to Dr Patricia Noxolo ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>), by 5 pm on Monday 15th April:
* a current CV (maximum 1 page);
* a covering letter demonstrating clearly that they have the requisite knowledge, skills and experience, including a preliminary plan of how they might carry out the research (no more than 2 pages).
All enquiries should be emailed to Dr Patricia Noxolo.
