Good morning,
Does anyone have a shelf of library books that are held within a department, not in the library? Our Art department has asked if they might curate a small display of books in a locked (but beautifully designed!) bookshelf within the Art department. The Art department is located on the other side of campus to the Library, so a 15-20 minute walk away and historically we have struggled to engage some of the Art students. Whilst we have been working on engagement in other ways, the academic who suggested this, is thinking that it would be eye catching and create some interest in exploring our stock. Students and staff could take it in turns to curate the display which would be thematic and could use books from other subject areas, not just art books. However our Acquisitions/ Collections team have pointed out several problems with this - it makes stock inaccessible for other users; security of stock - especially since some of the material we buy may be hard / expensive to replace; concern about the precedent that it would set with other departments wanting to do something similar. I was wondering if anyone has run something like this successfully and overcome these issues?
Many thanks,
Karen
