Re: Amanda's comment, yes, that is absolutely an important distinction to
make, though I dare say I never intended any kind of binary opposition
between a "non-western" upbringing (both coincidentally Indian, in this
case) and being educated in a "western" university where one would cancel
out the other. That kind of stance would not seem very conducive to having
open and interested discussions.
But, I chose my two rather arbitrary and off-the-top-of-my-head examples as
two anthropologists with a non-western background who generally practise
"western-style anthropology" (whatever might characterise that as a whole).
Of course, this is only a problem if one has a *very *general problem with
anthropology as it is taught and practised in, say, Euro-American
universities. And indeed, there are some who are intensely more critical of
anthropology in general, "despite" having a PhD from "the west" (note the
amount of scare quotes here that mark the problematic ways in which I am
using several far too big terms in a far too superficial manner, mainly in
the interest of expediency).
Zoe Todd is a scholar of a more ardently critical bent, and contributor to
the contemporary "de-colonialising of anthropology" debates. The following
blog post of hers ties in several different themes in that respect (starts
off with the HAU farce, but is not about that specifically):
