Dear all
An interesting discussion.
Please note that Paul Nchoji Nkwi is Cameroonian, most definitely not Nigerian. Note too that he holds a German PhD, which resonates with Mikkel Vindegg’s important intervention.
To Mikkel’s question: ‘what do you mean by “non-western”...?’ I’d add the question: why use a negative description? After all by doing so you are privileging something you call “western” and effectively othering those who, in your mind, aren’t associated with it.
Maybe the way forward is to look for anthropological works that explicitly seek to use under-represented epistemologies to upend work that’s dependent on dominant (if not hegemonic) epistemologies. Try Francis Nyamnjoh’s work that builds on an epistemology represented by Amos Tutuola in his novel, The Palm-Wine Drinkard. But note that, although Nyamnjoh is a Cameroonian, his PhD was obtained in the UK.
