Just a quick note to agree that certainly Japanese anthropology has its
roots both in its own folk studies of the late 19th and early 20th century
and in its colonialism. It is true that we tend to forget that Japan was
also a coloniser. But what of that more ephemeral version of colonialism,
the economic and political webs that form late capitalism? Just as Japan
sees itself as somehow post colonial because of the allied occupation and
the tidal wave of westernisation that began in the 19th century, how many
other societies see western modernity as a form of colonialism?
