Dear Allstat members,

We are hiring a contract role for a well-known pharmaceutical company in the UK. Their human genetics group is recognised as a valuable tool in drug discovery and development. They works closely with the therapeutic areas to use human genetics to identify and validate drug targets. Phenome Wide Association Studies (PheWAS) is a powerful tool for indication discovery, drug repurposing and for the prediction of safety signals for drug discovery and development programs. One of the current aims of the group is to create a PheWAS resource tailored to the needs of the company therapeutic area teams.

· JOB: Senior Computational Genetics Scientist

·         Contract duration: 12 months

·         Full time 37.5 hours

·         Office: Berkshire

· Pay rate: £50-53 per hour

·         Starting ASAP

This role will be primarily responsible for the implementation of a PheWAS solution that can provide translational insight to de-risk therapeutic projects. Responsibilities will include integration of summary statistics from public PheWAS resources, execution of GWAS in specific disease areas, co-development of a query and visualization interface and development of innovative analytical approaches to support maximum derivation of value from the resource. The successful candidate will be a key member of a highly motivated and dynamic multidisciplinary project team consisting of geneticists, computational biologists and IT experts.

Describe the main accountabilities for this role including significant tasks, responsibilities and projects Priority

* To develop and implement a Phenome Wide Association (PheWAS) resource

* To internalise and integrate prioritised external data resources

* To develop, script and implement key functionality and analytical approaches e.g. SNP-to-gene mapping, visualization of PheWAS results

* To develop internal processes and pipelines to run GWAS studies in support of PheWAS analysis in a cloud computing environment

* To develop and implement innovative analytical approaches to add additional value e.g. pathway-level burden tests, improved case ascertainment

* To work with project teams to define and run GWAS and PheWAS analyses and support interpretation and follow up

* To be responsible for monitoring developments in the external landscape (including but not limited to emerging data sources, analytical approaches, consortia, representative bodies etc.) and supporting decision making for which to pursue

Experience Required
MSc or higher in related field
5 years plus experience of devising, implementing and running genetic projects, with direct experience of GWAS and PheWAS, preferably within a Pharma environment

* Direct experience of generating, analysing and using genetic data generated through multiple platforms, including next generation sequencing (NGS) and associated analytical approaches.

* Direct experience of implementing and running PheWAS and GWAS analyses

* Good knowledge of statistics, with specific experience in, and application of statistical genetics.

* Advanced computational skills: proficiency in using R, python, bash and experience of working in a cloud environment

* Ability to conceive, develop and implement novel approaches

*              Problem solving skills

Preferred:

* Expertise in methods for functional interpretation of genomics data such as pathway enrichment, functional module detection, causal reasoning

*              Experience/understanding of ML/AI approaches

* Experience of the application of genetics and genetic approaches to drug discovery and development

* Knowledge of CWL (common workflow language)
