The call for the new NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellowships is now open.
These fellowships are designed to support people who are looking to start or advance a career in health research methodology. More information is available here https://www.nihr.ac.uk/our-research-community/NIHR-academy/nihr-training-programmes/fellowship-programme/nihr-pre-doctoral-fellowship.htm
The Medical Statistics Department at the London School of Hygiene and Tropic Medicine (LSHTM) is keen to identify suitable candidates to support their application. We offer some exciting projects supervised by leading experts in statistical methodology. Potential projects include:
1. Causal machine learning: optimising machine learning algorithms to improve predictive performance of mean outcomes a population exposed to a treatment in high dimensional settings (Dr Karla Diaz-Ordaz and Professor Stijn Vansteelandt)
2. Uses of causal inference in cluster randomised clinical trials to deal with recruitment bias, nonadherence and mediation. (Supervisors Dr Karla Diaz-Ordaz and Professor Nick Jewell)
3. Uses of machine learning algorithms for imputing missing data in high dimensional settings (Dr Karla Diaz-Ordaz)
4. Application and development of statistical methodology to large-scale observational data to gain an understanding of the mechanisms of chronic diseases. Example research projects could involve investigating how new treatments are improving life expectancy for people with cystic fibrosis, and how disease symptoms progress over the life course (Dr Ruth Keogh)
5. Field tests of interventions to prevent infectious disease incidence, including HIV, dengue, Zika and malaria (Professor Nick Jewell)
Projects could also be undertaken in the following general research areas:
1. Missing data (Dr Ruth Keogh; Professor James Carpenter)
2. Spatial epidemiology (Professor James Carpenter)
3. Alternative clinical trial design (Professor James Carpenter)
4. Analysis of survival data (Dr Ruth Keogh; Professor Nick Jewell)
