Fanny and Felix: the Mendelssohn siblings, their society and culture in musical historical context
Morley College London, The Holst Room
https://modernlanguages.sas.ac.uk/events/event/19371
Fanny and Felix loved each other immensely. Some say that they loved each other so immensely that their love transcended the boundaries of conventional love between siblings.
Fanny and Felix wrote music. But Felix was a boy and Fanny was a girl. And Fanny was industrious and smart and musical, and Felix loved and protected her so much that he couldn't accept or encourage her talents. And Fanny was jealous of Felix and painted his image and wrote him long adoring letters.
So this is the story of Fanny and Felix, the Mendelssohn siblings whose personal relationship and history has so much to tell us about their times and morals, their ideas and limitations, their habits and aspirations. It has also a lot to tell us about our own times, our morals, our ideas, our biases and aspirations.
This lecture-performance, devised and curated by Artemis Ignatidou and the 'Cassandras' trio, will tell the story of the Mendelssohn siblings in relation to their times, their society, and their personal and compositional identities. It will position the Mendelssohns within their social class, their German national environment, and of course within their domestic setting. The lecture-performance will feature works by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn.
The Cassandras trio consists of: Nikos Stavlas (piano), Sophia Baltatzi (violin) and Gregor Fuhrmann (cello). Artemis Ignatidou is visiting a fellow at the Ernst Bloch Centre for German Thought (IMLR, School of Advanced Study, University of London).
