Hi all,
I've just been directed to take a look at this thread, as it seems that I might be able to help various people on here. I'm a Surrey-based Office 365 Solutions Architect who specialises in IM & compliance - some of you will possibly have seen me speaking at various IRMS events. I've overseen various EDRM solutions in Office 365, including two using data governance retention labels. I'm also directly engaged with Microsoft via their Content Services partnership - so get to speak directly to some of the senior members of the Office 365 team.
Firstly, I'm happy to help anyone who would like assistance or advice - feel free to throw questions my way.
To respond to some of the points raised:
Content Types - I'd like to partially quash the rumour that Content Types are going anywhere (they might, but I don't think that there is any evidence for it). Firstly, in the various conversations I've been having with Microsoft and others in the community, there has been no discussion on abandoning or removing Content Types. There have been discussions about potentially replacing the Content Type Hub with a better solution - but I feel Content Types are here for a while yet. Secondly, Microsoft are still investing into new features that use Content Types. The new Site Scripts/Designs were built to support Content Types; Teams is being extended to support Content Types etc.
Retention Labels - Having said that Retention Labels are very much the way to go. I've used them in the last two EDRM solutions I've overseen, and will continue to use them over and above legacy RM alternatives. There are major gaps that need to be filled, but the key to me is to improve the quality and consistency of the application of retention labels - and try not to rely on manual tagging. I'd strongly suggest looking to set default retention labels on libraries/folders (and if budget allows automate this) - this is especially the case if you are considering using the Sync Client.
I'll be speaking about retention labels to the IRMS Public Sector group (15th March) and again at the IRMS annual conference if any of you are interested in finding out more.
Regards,
Rob Bath
