Catching up with the Kindertransportees 80 years on.
How do the Jewish refugees who came as children to the UK to escape Nazi
Germany and Austria feel about their experiences looking back?
Professor Thüne (Visiting Fellow, Magdalene College, Cambridge) will
introduce her book
'Gerettet: Berichte von Kindertransport und Auswanderung nach
Großbritannien' and report on her research
26th of February, 5.30pm, in Cambridge
All welcome. The event will be IN GERMAN.
Venue: Raised Faculty Building, room 106
Voices from the book:
During the war one was not supposed to speak German and also my mother
had told me: „Don’t speak German. […]“ and „Be English“. […] But the
English tended to react like this: „Where do you come from?“ „I’m from
Germany“. „Oh.“ Brief silence. „How is it you’re here?“ „We had to get
out“. One didn’t talk about the Jewish background.
(Vernon Reynolds)
The school uniform was wonderful. Finally I was exactly like the others.
I had never been like this. It was a great liberation. There was no
difference and that was wonderful.
(Margarete von Rabenau)
